Test a phone microphone and speaker step by step
Record and replay a short sample, check speaker output, and isolate permission or audio-routing issues before suspecting hardware.

Prepare the audio path
Choose a quiet place. Check whether headphones or a Bluetooth accessory are connected, because you may be listening through a different output from the phone speaker. Start at low volume and increase only to a comfortable level. Keep the microphone opening unobstructed without inserting anything into it.
Record a short microphone sample
Start the microphone test and allow access if you are comfortable doing so. Say a short, non-private sentence at a normal speaking distance. Stop recording, play it back and listen for understandable speech, gaps and unexpected distortion. Repeat once with the same distance and surroundings.
A silent playback can come from the recording path or the output path. Check that another known audio source plays normally before concluding that the microphone failed. Phone Test does not separately certify every microphone fitted to a multi-microphone device.
Check the speaker
Run the speaker test at low volume. Listen for sound, interruptions and obvious buzzing. If the sound is coming from an accessory, disconnect or change the output using your device controls, then repeat. Avoid interpreting very high-volume distortion as proof of a fault without a normal-volume comparison.
Handle permission problems
Browser camera and microphone access requires permission and a secure context. A denied prompt or an unavailable media interface prevents the page from making the observation. Recheck the site’s permission in browser settings and try again; this is different from hearing a repeatable hardware symptom.
Record a useful outcome
Write down which output you heard and whether you used an accessory. If only one app has a problem, note that. A short browser test cannot measure calibrated loudness, frequency response, noise cancellation quality or call-network audio. Compare persistent symptoms with the phone’s own recorder or diagnostic tools.
