Phone microphone not working: isolate the failing step

Separate microphone permission, input selection, recording and playback before deciding what to try next.

First: can the browser open the microphone?

Start the microphone test. If permission is denied, check the site permission and the browser app’s microphone permission in device settings. Return and retry. A denied request says nothing about the condition of the microphone.

Input opens, but your voice is missing

Check mute controls and disconnect an unwanted audio accessory. If the test lists several inputs, choose the one you want and make a new recording. Labels are supplied by the browser and may not identify every microphone in a phone array. Speak at a normal distance, pause, then speak again; an input meter can react to background noise as well as speech.

Recording exists, but playback is silent

Press Play yourself and check the volume and audio output. Run the speaker test. If that is also silent, investigate output routing before blaming the microphone. If other audio works, retry recording and compare with a supported browser or the device recorder.

It works here, but not in your calling app

Compare the calling app’s permission, mute state and selected input. A successful browser recording only confirms the path used in that session. Test the same accessory in both places and note the difference. Do not assume the browser can diagnose a call-network problem.

Record the result

Note the input used, whether the meter changed, whether a recording was created and whether playback was understandable. Use Issue for an observed unexpected result, and Not supported for an unavailable interface. Never send a private recording just to report a site problem.
